4 Ways to Style a Lob

the lob

Whether you just got a lob haircut, have had one for a while, or are thinking about getting one, this is for you. Lobs can be so much fun to style. You can achieve such a mature sexy look without much effort.

I got my long hair cut into a lob (longbob) a couple months ago and I can definitely say I still love it. I was the girl who would cry at the thought of a trim. Long hair used to be a NECESSITY, but things change! You can read about my decision to get it cut on my Getting a Lob Haircut blog post, if you haven’t already.

Anyways, back to the lob hairstyles. I’m going to give you 4 different ways to style a lob, with tutorial videos, and explain a little bit about each style too.

The 4 Styles: Beachy Waves | Braided Crown | Ballerina Bun |Voluminous Straight Hair

Beachy Waves – Braided Crown – Ballerina Bun

This video covers 3 out of 4 of the hairstyles. I apologize ahead of time for this girl’s voice/personality –it can be quite irritating. I do like her hairstyles though so I really wanted to use this video.

Beachy Waves

[ Prep by spraying hair with a heat protection/hairspray duo: Hot Off The Press and some texture spray: Flip It Over Texture Spray ]

1 ) Start at the front and curl your hair with a wand, wrapping it away from your face

2 ) When you get halfway through (to the middle of the back), reverse the direction of the curls

3 ) Take small pieces from the top and curl them tightly for more volume

4 ) Comb your fingers through your hair to make your style look more beachy and natural

5 ) Hairspray and Texture spray your hair again, then massage the roots a little

6 ) Serum is optional (I personally don’t use it because it can make finer hair get oily)

Braided Crown

1 ) Complete the previous Beachy Waves first

2 ) Take a 1-2 inch piece of hair from one side of your head and create a braid, bobby pin in it the back

3 ) Repeat step 2 for the other side of your head

4 ) Gently pull apart the braids to make them looser, creating larger braids

Ballerina Bun

[ Prep by working some Milkshake Incredible Milk in your hair. This will help with frizz and the overall look of the bun ]

1 ) Gather your hair on top of your head and twist it into a bun, secure with an elastic

2 ) Bobby pin any bun pieces that don’t want to cooperate (sticking out)

3 ) Gently comb and hairspray any frizzies

4 ) Loosen up the hair around your head to create volume and a more natural look (optional)

Voluminous Straight Hair

You may be thinking, “I know how to straighten hair, this shouldn’t be a tutorial. It doesn’t take a genius to do it“. Well that’s true. Flat ironing hair is easy but there are certain tricks and techniques to make straightened hair look so so so much better. A lot of the time, flat ironed hair looks pinned to the scalp or just won’t stray straightened throughout the day. Try the techniques in this tutorial.

[ Prep by spraying hair with Hot Off The Press or Milkshake Incredible Milk for heat protection, then clip your hair into sections ]

1 ) Flat iron hair using the “C” shape technique

2 ) Style the crown of your head using overdirection: styling hair in the opposite direction of how it normally lays on your head

3 ) Style the front pieces with a forward “C” shape

4 ) Go over the ends to make sure they’re flattened out

5 ) Instead of using oil to smooth your hair, apply some Milkshake. This stuff is honestly amazing

  1. Thank you for the great tips! I have had the same style for years and I guess I just never knew it had a name! haha I love the different styling ideas for my “lob” too! I am going to have to try some of these out for myself. What do you recommend as far as “holding” spray or gel or mousse for people with thick, straight hair? I like to curl mine and I really want to try the Beachy Waves but I don’t think anything I have will hold the style. Any recommendations?

    • Ashley,

Awe yay. I’m glad you now know the name of your style.

I really recommend trying Hot Off The Press. It’s an awesome heat protection + hairspray that is great for all hair styles. It lasts really long!

Another tip I have is that you grab smaller pieces of hair while curling so they get more exposure to the heat. It also might be a problem with your styling tool. Some great ones are: Pink Curling Wand and Curl Genius.

  2. Hey Gina,
What a great post, I love these hairstyles but I never knew what they were all called and sometimes I have problems communicating with my gf on what style she looks good with.

I love the beachy waves (Who doesn’t?), very feminine, casual and sexy I’m definitely showing her this website of yours. Wow I didn’t know its that hard to style a hair, makes me appreciate girls more. Loving your post, keep up the good work!

    • Riaz Shah,

What’s not to love about beachy waves? I’m glad you like them too. And yes, girls hair is art –you better appreciate it… ha ha

I hope your girlfriend likes my website!

  3. Nice site Gina! Terrific hair styling tips and first hand experience. You can see the results in the great before and after pics, and view the awesome video tutorials! Your site is put together well, and highly interactive. Need hair advice? Visit this site. Before coming here, I didn’t know about the lob cut, but it’s appearance stuck in my mind. Natural, but slightly tamed. Great for work and recreation!

  4. HI Gina, I have just been through your article on lob styles with my wife as she is looking to do something new for a wedding we are going to. Fabulous timing. I loved the beachy waves video… yes, the voice is a little perky, but I loved it and so did my wife – this style suits her really well. But I did like the braids too. So good having video in your articles, it makes it easier to decide.
    cheers James

    • James,

The funny thing about beachy waves is that they are great for just about any occasion, especially a wedding. The added braids to the beachy waves would be absolutely perfect for a wedding. I’m glad you liked my article.

  5. What you’re doing here is so useful! It is very exciting and helpful. A lot of people feel the need to keep their hair gorgeous, and you’re doing a perfect job helping. In my opinion, everyone should put some effort in their appearence. I also like that you write in a very detailed and thorough manner. Also, it is written in a very easy to understand language. I am definitely going to bookmark this page.

    • Daniel Hauge,

I agree that some effort should be put into everyone appearance. Although it doesn’t define you as a person, it’s still important to be able to express yourself with the way you look!
